The City of Absurdity The Lighthouse at the End of the World
1998/99

Lynch probing Poe’s lost days

David Lynch and his new Picture Factory production company will join forces with Marian Rees and Jonathan Sanger to produce a film version of "Lighthouse at the End of the World." Christopher DeVore is currently adapting the screenplay from Stephen Marlowe's novel about a mysterious disappearance of Edgar Allen Poe.

The project reunites several of the creative talents responsible for Lynch’s critically acclaimed 1980 film "The Elephant Man," including Lynch, Sanger and DeVore, who wrote the script with Lynch and Eric Bergren.

Neil Edelstein, who is partnered in the Picture Factory with Mary Sweeney and Lynch, emphasized that while Lynch loves the novel, he has decided not to direct the film version. No director has yet been attached.

"Lighthouse" concerns the disappearance of, the great 19th century American author and poet just prior to his death. In 1849, he was found in a Baltimore gutter, drunk and dying, after having been missing for a week.

The Project was brought to the Picture Factory from Rees and Associates by Edelstein. He will exec produce along with Sweeney, Lynch, R ees and Rees’ associate Anne Hopkins.

Edelstein and Tom McGuire of Hansen, Jacobson, Teller & Hoberman negotiated the deal with DeVore, who is repped by Marti Blumenthal of Writers and Artists and Sam Fischer at Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca & Fischer.
